[pic1] Whether or not New Zealand was on your travel itinerary bucket list before Peter Jackson’s popular adaptation of JRR Tolkein’s Lord of the Rings saga came to the silver screen near you, it almost certainly registered on your radar afterwards. That is because the film showcased, as only a cinematic, international release can, the natural beauty and diversity of the country turned fantasy Middle Earth on IMAX screens around the world. How to travel in luxury and see the U.S.

Recently, or to be more precise, two nights ago, I came back from a long trip. Well, kind of a long trip. Short compared to the Seven years in Tibet kind of stuff, long compared to a week with an all-inclusive party package. Just to lengthen my summer this year, I was away for a month and a half, and I got back only because of lack on money, otherwise I probably would have kept going. I went to Malta, Greece, Spain, Belgium, Turkey, just to mention...well, all of the places where I went to. If I... read more

Want to go to a Caribbean cruise? You could get it for free!

Mmm, Caribbean. Whenever I think about it, it kind of takes me away from the reality for a moment. For a moment life is a bliss. And then a moment later I start to see dollar signs in front of my closed eyes. And I remember that there's a reason why I often hitch-hike. The reason being too much money spent on beer. Of course. What did you think? Fortunately, Princess Cruises has just announced a campaign called "The Campaign to Escape Completely". Escape from what? From unemployment, from emp... read more

5 weeks in israel........political report from an american

I spent 5 weeks in Israel for my 8th trip there. My brother has lived there since 1986. I would like to report that Israelis are understandably in a "siege mentality." Their farmers' livestock are being stolen by the Arabs and Bedouins, and Israeli law does not allow them to defend themselves against the theft. Israelis cant wear Jewish symbols or head coverings WITHIN Israel in certain areas without Harassment or physical attack in their own country, by Arabs. If Israel atte... read more

Friday morning with Charlie in the old city of Jerusalem

Friday morning with Charlie in the old city of Jerusalem. Charlie and I drove from his town, Kfar Adumim, to the old city this morning, Friday. Walked in the Jaffa gate to the Jewish quarter. I found the "rivka" jewellery store with the same nice Jewish gentleman with Kipah. He's several generations in Jerusalem. Bought things for family and friends. Walked to the western wall. Went inside where about 200 men were praying. Photos were allowed although a chassid complained... read more

Musings from the land of milk and honey...and I don't mean Hollywood

Joys and sorrows of Israel. Israel spends about 20% of its GNP on defence. USA spends about 3 to 5%. No choice. At the Canadian-Israeli Sport Center in Metula, north Israel, I went downstairs to the bowling area. It was a riot to watch these religious Israeli kids, somewith long earlocks...payesses...trying to bowl. They were totally untaught. Holding the ball wrong....bowling it wrong etc. Sometimes 3 of them would be at the line goofing off together. At times, I offered... read more

All you need to do is ask

At least that's what they say. And they are right. If you do ask, the answer can be either yes or no. If you do not ask, the answer by default is no. Ask even if the potential for failure is 99%...if you ask, you still have a better chance of getting the answer "yes" than without asking. And if they say no, it's normal. Life is unpredictable, for travellers like me

So there I was, with great intentions to stay the night in Saint-maximine, sunbath a bit and enjoy myself in any other way possible, but it disn't really work out like that. Water crisis in Israel

The water level in Israel is extremely low. Most water comes from the sea of Galilea and it is below the "red line" now. They drew a new red line below it...which is crazy. Israelis are allowed to water their plants/outdoor irrigation/hose system 3 times per week from about 2am to 2:30 am. Most common mistakes travelers make

Traveling is fun. Or interesting. Or a survival trip. By the end of the day, the way I see it, independent of what it is, as long as the destination and the trip isn’t boring, it’s always worthwhile. Each of us is different – our personalities are different, our interests, our way of living, expectations. I hate people saying you should do that or you shouldn’t do that. Usually, the only thing someone can say about most of the issues is how they feel about it or how it turned out for THEM. T... read more

Journey To Morocco and Western Sahara – Essaouira, anyone?

We bought the tickets to Essaouira and waited for our bus. Well, about one and a half hours later the bus still wasn’t there and I went to talk to the guy who sold us the tickets. Would have been nice if he mentioned it before, but now he said there was no room in the bus and the next one goes in about 8 hours. So much of that plan. Fortunately we managed to sell our tickets back and as we didn’t have much time before our plane from Marrakech back to Düsseldorf-Weeze anyhow, we decided to go ... read more

Journey To Morocco and Western Sahara – back to Agadir

We left Laayoune at about 1900, the time which happened to be the exact time in the bus schedule as well. That was surprising, considering so far none of our transportation in Morocco had been on-time. Quite refreshing, isn’t it? This time, it wasn’t just the locals and the two of us in the bus. The third tourist in Laayoune, the English teacher was heading back to Agadir as well. Like on our way from Agadir to Laayoune, we again saw something like ten or more police stops. Journey To Morocco and Western Sahara – off to Laayoune, Western Sahara

Western Sahara was annexed with Morocco in 1976 and about half of the native population fled to Algeria where most of them still reside in five specially created refugee camps. No countries have officially recognized the country. „A guerrilla war with the Polisario Front contesting Rabat's sovereignty ended in a 1991 UN-brokered cease-fire; a UN-organized referendum on final status has been repeatedly postponed. Journey To Morocco and Western Sahara – trip to Agadir

Getting to the bus station is usually easy, you just look for signs to "Gare routiere". But in Morocco, in many cities, there seem to be at least two different bus stations. One for stupid people and one for just a bit smarter ones. Or okay, I could say that one is for poor people and the other is for rich people, but that would be a plain lie. The main difference there is – the busses in one station are old, ugly and if it catches fire, I guess it’s a normal thing. And in the same bus station, ... read more

To Hitch-hike or not to hitch-hike?

Just to get this blog started, here's one article about my trip couple of years ago. Traveling from Estonia to Spain and back, covering about 8000km altogether, passing through Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Germany and France, is not the easiest trip to take, is it?
